Why You’ll Love It
The first Broadway theater to be built since 1928 and part of a complex that included the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the New York Philharmonic, the Vivian Beaumont Theater was one of the most important cultural commissions in the United States at the time and was originally conceived as a repertory theater. Eero Saarinen, a Detroit-based architect, was chosen to design it, collaborating with set designer Jo Mielziner on the intricate interior. One of the first of its kind, the interior was made to be very flexible by designing the auditorium with a stage that could be either a thrust stage that projects into the audience or could convert into a more traditional proscenium stage. Notable Previous Productions include Antigone, The Crucible, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Doll's House, The Philadelphia Story, Oedipus Rex, Anything Goes, Carousel, Parade, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, and most recently, McNeal.
