A subway ride or Metro North train ride gets you to this lush escape from the city, the New York Botanical Garden. The expansive grounds can (and should) be explored year-round, with seasonal exhibits like the Orchid Show from mid-February to mid-April not to be missed. Plan to spend at least a few hours here, especially during peak bloom seasons. Try to grab a sandwich on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx beforehand for a picnic in the gardens. The south entrance has plenty of tables and chairs to dine at and people-watch.
